It’s been a little bit since I’ve written an article but I thought now would be the time to get back at it.
Today I wanted to talk about a place that, in my opinion, doesn’t get enough love! While Boise is one of the least known state capitals in the US, it can catch you unaware. Trendy, urban, and refreshingly modern, the largest city in Idaho has a vivacious downtown scene complete with sophisticated wine bars, bistros, and walking streets. With lots of things to do and see, it’s daunting to know exactly what to make of this city. But Boise is worth the visit if you are close by.
Basque Block
Outside of Spain, Boise houses one of the largest populations of Basque with about 15,000 living in this city. The émigrés arrived in this city in the early 18th-century and they worked as shepherds. Few of them still work as shepherds today, but the distinct culture’s rich elements are still alive. Glances of this can still be seen along Grove Street between Capitol Boulevard and 6th Street. Sandwiched between bars, restaurants, and ethnic taverns is the Basque Cultural & Museum Center. This is a great place to explore the intricacies of Basque history and culture.
Idaho State Capitol
Constructed from native sandstone, the Idaho State Capitol features the neoclassical style that was in vogue when it was built. In 2010, this building was refurbished extensively and today geothermal hot water heats it. Tours inside this building takes visitors through the state’s history, covering 20 paintings that honor and depict all the past Governors. Another highlight of the Idaho State Capitol is the magnificent Winged Victory statue replica.
Boise River Greenbelt
Boise River Greenbelt is a 25 mile trail that crosses the entire Boise, providing locals and visitors with beautiful running and walking trails. Without having to leave the city, the paths will immerse you right in nature’s wonders. The collection of museums and parks along this riverway is connected by over 30 miles of multipurpose paths.
World Center for Birds of Prey
One of the most misunderstood creatures in the world is birds of prey, and this center provides a place for their study, conservation, and appreciation. Hawks, ospreys, falcons, owls, and eagles – this is the place to encounter these fascinating dinosaurs descendants. There are programs throughout the year for various categories of visitors, from live bird demonstrations to museum exhibitions.
Old Idaho Penitentiary Site
The US is well known for its prison system, and this incredible attraction offers insight into the intrinsic nature of incarceration in the United States. The exterior of this site seems punishing and gloomy all at once. However, when inside the grounds become an incredible venue for exploration, dotted with historical exploration. You’ll also find impressive bronze collections and military memorabilia in this old penitentiary.
