Birds have a number of features of the digestive system that distinguish them from mammals. These include the lack of teeth and a soft palate and a feeding strategy that allows for maximum ingestion of food in a short time. As birds need to keep down weight to fly most cannot afford the luxury of prolonged food storage or digestion. The gizzard of a bird is a highly muscular structure lined with a tough, abrasive keratin-like layer called koilin. The sandpaper-like grinding action is assisted by grits and stones deliberately ingested. This action is enormously powerful and can even deal with pieces of metal. Coarse Pigeon grit is suitable for Pigeons and large birds, wild or caged. It contains flint grits that act as grinding agents in the gizzard to aid digestion. Limestone and oyster shell are soluble ingredients which are high in calcium and trace element minerals All stock items are normally delivered within 72 hours (weekends excluded) |
