Juniper

Nutritious Juniper Berries, the partially dried fruit from a coniferous shrub.

Juniperus communis to give the proper name is a member of the Cypress family

juniper berries

With a pleasant bittersweet taste, with a hit of pine, normally used by humans to flavour Gin.  They have a diuretic action which is helpful in dispersing fluid retention. They are particularly popular with captive British birds and also many varieties of finches, they can also be offered to wild birds in the garden during the winter months when they will be taken with relish by the local inhabitants. The content of vitamin C and vitamin B are high in this fruit, and Juniper is also a useful detoxifying herb. They are also reputed to have a stimulating effect on the appetite in humans which explains the consumption of gin as an aperitif. It is recommended that pregnant women have no contact with this product.

Taking upto three years to ripen on the bush, with the exception of Gin and some other Spirits, Cooks in the mountainous regions of Italy, France and Germany use this berry to flavour rich game dishes. Although they do grow in Britain we do not have many traditional culinary uses for it. Much to the benefit of our British Birds Population.
